Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation - also known as mammoplasty, is a surgical enhancement procedure used to accentuate the size and/or shape of a woman's breasts.

While surgery will make the breasts fuller, the surgery will not move the breasts closer together or lift sagging breasts.  This plastic surgery procedure is a tremendous help to patients who desire larger breasts, who have lost volume due to childbirth/nursing, or who have undergone another failed breast enhancement surgery and want to gain a more natural look again.

Reasons for Considering Breast Enhancement/Enlargement Surgery:
Enhance body shape if breasts are too small.
Increase chest volume after childbirth and nursing.
Equalize a difference in breast sizes.
Reconstruct breasts following a mastectomy, injury or failed prior surgery.

Best Candidates for Breast Augmentation Surgery:
The best candidates for Breast Augmentation Surgery are healthy women who are unsatisfied with the size or shape of their breasts.  It is usually best to wait until after you are finished having children or before you are ready to have children.

General Procedure:
Enhancement or Enlargement surgery involves making a small incision to insert an implant into the breast area in order to enlarge the breast.  The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis at a hospital or state-of-the-art surgical center while the patient is under general anesthesia.  There are several possible locations for the small incisions that will be used for inserting the breast implant.  The most frequent technique utilizes an incision made in the lower portion of the breast.  Another technique, though less frequently used, involves making an incision in the armpit.  A third technique makes an incision around the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple).  The best technique will be decided together between the patient and Dr. Varon during the consultation.

Breast augmentation surgery typically lasts about 1 hour.  During surgery, the chest tissue is raised to create an open pocket under the chest tissue or beneath the chest wall muscle.  Inserting an implant behind the breast muscle can look more natural and increase a woman's size by one or more bra cup sizes.  Implants contain a saline solution (similar to saltwater) or a silicone gel. Dr. Varon will discuss the advantages of each option during your consultation.

Recovery Process:
Generally, post-operative instructions call for plenty of rest and limited movement in order to speed up the healing process and recovery time.  A surgical bra will need to be worn for a few weeks.  Patients sometimes report minor pain associated with the surgery.  This pain can be treated effectively with oral medication. Most patients are back to work in about one week. You will need to wait at least 4 weeks before exercising or heavy lifting.  While complications are rare, patients can minimize potential problems by carefully following the directions given by Dr. Varon after surgery.
