Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction - is a physically and emotionally rewarding surgical procedure for women who have lost one or both breasts due to cancer, injury or other condition.

The creation of new breasts can dramatically improve self-esteem and confidence.  Keep in mind that breast reconstruction can give women natural-looking breasts but they will never look or feel exactly the same as before the breast was removed.

Reasons for Considering Breast Reconstruction Surgery:
Reconstruct breasts following a mastectomy or injury.
To even out breast size.
Permanently regain breast shape.
To feel better about your body.

Best Candidates for Breast Reconstruction Surgery:
The best candidates for Breast Reconstruction Surgery are those without medical conditions or other illnesses that may impair healing.  It is important to have a positive outlook and realistic goals for restoring breast and body image.

General Procedure:
There are multiple breast reconstruction methods ranging from using a patient's own tissue, to inserting breast implants or a combination of the two.  Depending on each individuals' specific needs and goals Dr. Varon will recommend which reconstruction options are possible for you during your initial consultation.  If fat grafting is performed, Dr. Varon will take fat tissue from the upper abdomen.

For many women it is possible to undergo Breast Reconstruction immediately after undergoing a mastectomy.  If additional time is needed to heal and recover, Dr. Varon will recommend waiting before performing the surgery.

Recovery Process:
Generally, post-operative instructions call for plenty of rest and limited movement in order to speed up the healing process and recovery time.  A surgical bra will need to be worn for a few weeks.  Patients sometimes report minor pain associated with the surgery.  This pain can be treated effectively with oral medication.  Most patients are back to work in about two weeks.  While complications are rare, patients can minimize potential problems by carefully following the directions given by Dr. Varon after surgery.
